Facade battens: cladding external walls with Rhombus strips
Of course, you could simply plaster your external walls and paint them any color you like. But the facade is largely responsible for the first impression of your house and should therefore be unique. With diamond-shaped battens for the facade, you can give your new or old building a special touch and turn it into a real eye-catcher.
What are diamond-shaped battens for the facade?
Diamond-shaped battens are wooden battens with a specific shape. When viewed in cross-section, they have the shape of a parallelogram. On the facade, rhombus battens have the effect of optimally draining away any water (e.g. from rain). This is due to the bevelled side of the facade battens, which slopes outwards.
Diamond-shaped skirting boards can be attached directly to the supporting battens on the facade. Alternatively, you can also combine the wall cladding for the exterior walls with improved thermal insulation and then mount the facade skirting boards on top of that.
Tip: You can receive an attractive subsidy for insulating your façade as part of the federal subsidy for efficient buildings (BEG). Up to 15% of the eligible costs are subsidized - up to a maximum of 30,000.00 per residential unit - i.e. up to 4,500.00. With an individual renovation roadmap (iSFP), the subsidy even increases to up to 20% (maximum 6,000.00 per residential unit). Facade strips can also be part of the eligible measures.
The advantages of skirting boards
If you want to cover your facade with rhombus battens, you have a huge amount of design freedom. You can cover the entire exterior walls with facade battens. But partial cladding is also conceivable, for example in the area of the terrace, only on the ground floor or upper floor, or just on one wall.
In addition, a facade made of rhombus battens has these advantages:
- If something is damaged, the facade battens can be easily replaced afterwards.
- There is very little risk of mold growth.
- You can cover large areas with relatively little effort.
- You are using an ecological, renewable raw material.
- Native woods such as Douglas fir are robust and weather-resistant.
- The cladding battens usually last for several decades, and with regularly refreshed impregnation, even significantly longer.
- Even without additional thermal insulation, wooden cladding battens optimize the energy consumption of the house.
By the way: you do not necessarily have to regularly paint rhombus battens for the facade. They will discolour over time without painting, but they will still look good. This does not affect their lifespan.
Cladding a facade with rhombus strips do it yourself?
You can either have a specialist company install cladding for your facade using wooden battens or you can do it yourself. With a little manual skill and a basic set of tools, it's not a problem at all. To do it, you make a substructure out of wooden battens. This forms the basis for attaching the facade moldings and also ensures rear ventilation. However, it is best if there are two of you. A second pair of hands to hold makes the work much easier.
